How Possums Are Different In Terms of Hibernation

South Carolina possums fall under the category of small furry animals and if you see their body structure, you can easily state that they need protection! They can easily be preyed by cats, dogs, bears and all animals which are bigger than their size. They are tiny but can be problematic for your yard and pets and at home. Animals don’t like cold weather due to reasons that are known to everyone! This is the reason that most of them enter hibernation stage during this period. But possums don’t hibernate at all!

Make their den warm: Columbia possums can’t dig deep into the ground and this is the reason that they look for ready-made and abandoned nests which they can acquire right away. They collect twigs and leaves to spread in the den so that they can have some warmth. They create warm temperature inside their den to avoid cold outside. They hunker down their dens and wait for the cold weather to get over.

Find for warm escape into human homes: Possums need warmth for the frostbite that hits their hairless tail, paws and ears too. They are hit hardly by the cold weather and hence they look for places which are warm and cosy. This is when they step to residential areas for finding space in the attic or garage. Store food for hard times: Possums have to look for their food to survive in winters. Unfortunately, cold weather comes with fair share of cons! Adaptable: The body of the Columbia possums is such that they can neither store food nor any extra body fat and hence they need to be active for the whole year around, no matter the weather is warm or cold. Although, the duration of sleeping time of the possums increases in this weather as compared to their daily routine. They are nocturnal animals but in winters they step outside during the day when it is little warmer. It can be said that they become diurnal in winters.
