What To Do If A Skunk Gets Into A House, Bedroom Or Kitchen?

The thought of having a smelly South Carolina animal inside the home is quite stressful. If a skunk sprays their scent inside your home it can take quite a lot of hard work and cost to get rid of the smell. When dealing with problem skunks it is important to stay away from them to avoid getting sprayed. If skunks see you as a threat they will spray from a distance that can travel several meters. Avoid fast, quick movements where you may startle the animal.

Be careful with Columbia skunks if they are inside your home when it comes to trapping them. If they feel like they are trapped they will become fearful. You are lucky if the skunk is in a room that has an opening that leads directly outside. If this is not the case then try and leave a trail of food such as peanut butter or marshmallows which will help to guide the skunk out of your home. If this fails there is another option such as trying to trap the rodent so it can then be relocated. This should only be attempted if you have a proper cage on hand and have made yourself familiar with the risks involved when trying to trap a skunk.

You can place the trap in the room that the skunk is in with food as the bait. Once the skunk has been caught and the trap door shuts behind it then the animal is secured. It is best to place a blanket over the cage and remove the cage from your property. If you don’t want to relocate the animal or not sure where is the best place to relocate the skunk you can call your local wildlife center who can either advise you on where to relocate or where to take the skunk for them to relocate it.

Cleaning up:
If you find the skunk has sprayed inside your home somewhere like the kitchen or laundry then you will need to remove the scent which takes quite a lot of hard work.

There are homemade recipes on the internet you can try and see how you go but if these fail you will need to try a more commercial cleaner for the specific purpose.

You need to look for items with ingredients like hydrogen peroxide, bicarb soda and citrus scents.

If you try a few things and these all seem to fail the last option is to call the experts in who can advise the best option. Sometimes depending where the spray is it may mean replacing the items such as floor boards and carpets where the smell just sinks in and won’t go away.
